Hi, I’m Toby!
I come from Teignmouth in Devon, England. I was awarded the Cambridge Technical award in art and design, my foundation studies were done at King Edward VI College and I am currently studying at Falmouth University on the Illustration BA Hons course.
I have worked as a freelance illustrator throughout my studies, working on a range of commissions from portraiture to children's books and newspapers. Alongside this my work has been exhibited at the St. Endellion music festival in Cornwall.
I have experience in teaching, workshops and demonstrations at college and degree level. I am passionate about sharing my love of art with people and extremely enjoy this being an element to my work.
I have always been deeply interested in drawing and this is what makes up the bulk of my practice. Going out with sketchbooks, drawing real people in everyday life, attending life drawing classes, I love really anything where I get the chance to draw.
I most often like to work straight with pens. I want people viewing my work to be able to see my initial observations, see where I've made edits or corrections and how I have resolved this.
I use tea bags to achieve the unique background colour in my work, using watercolour glazes, pencils, collage, masking tape, ink and acrylic paint to build up from this.
My work is inspired by a wide range of sources from fellow artists and illustrators to politics, music, film, television, plays and literature.
